Given a girl's relationship with her foundation is one of the most important in her life, my MO is to treat potential bases like prospective boyfriends: make them prove they're worth it and always,
always, inspect in the cold hard light of day before committing.
The four fundamentals:
1. Don't test foundation on the back of your hand and expect it to suit your face. Apply it to your jaw line and blend down into your neck to find the perfect match. Then check it in natural light does it still look as good?
2. Go shopping naked. The best way to trial how a new formula performs is on fresh skin. Pack your favourite primer for a proper road test.
3. Never buy on impulse. Wear the contender while you shop for shoes, during lunch, and then check after coffee. How's it holding up?
4. Never use foundation to impose the colour you wish your skin was accept your natural tone and make it glow. An unnatural colour always looks, well, unnatural.
