If the BAFTAs, aka the 2012 British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, are a warm-up to the Academy Awards, this year’s red carpet showing left us feeling lukewarm at best. Yes, London is currently going through a chilly snap but the stars also left us cold with almost everyone taking the safe route with chic yet unstated gowns…Yawn! Yes, Penelope Cruz, Jessica Chastain and even (famous risk-taker) Tilda Swinton, we’re talking about you.
Big points to Meryl Streep (who picked up the BAFTA for Best Actress for The Iron Lady) and Christina Hendricks for opting for va-va-voom corseted Vivienne Westwood gowns, but we only wish you both hadn’t chosen black! And we love Michelle Williams for adding quirk to her plain cream and black H&M bespoke strapless gown with an Olympia Le-Tan clutch made to look like a book by Arthur Miller – once husband to Marilyn Monroe, whom she portrays in My Week With Marilyn.
At least Christina Ricci got into the awards season spirit in a molten-gold Givenchy Couture dress that livened up the line-up. C’mon ladies, give us some dresses to remember for the Oscars puh-lease!
Going the safe route: Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Penelope Cruz and Tilda Swinton.
