Gwyneth’s country movie bombs

While Gwyneth Paltrow enjoyed making her latest film, Country Strong, where she plays a fallen country crooner making a comeback, and has said that there “definitely will be singing in my future. I know that I won’t stop singing and playing guitar,” it seems US audiences do not agree, with the film only taking in $7.3 million on it’s opening weekend. That’s a few million short of its $12.5 million production cost. Ouch!

Fashion takes centre stage

It’s showtime! Grab the girls and hit the Sydney Opera House for some super-stylish theatre.

We love a night at the theatre – especially when it features a fabulous mix of homegrown talent and fashion.

So it’s no wonder we’re excited about the production of Love, Loss And What I Wore at the Sydney Opera House, which boasts a stellar Aussie cast, each dressed in super-chic LBDs designed by Carla Zampatti.

Mirrah Foulkes, Magda Szubanski, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Judi Farr and Amanda Muggleton star in the show that explores the love/hate relationship women have with their wardrobes.

Nora and Delia Ephron – who penned the screenplays When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless In Seattle – have adapted it for the stage, based on Ilene Beckerman’s best-selling book.

Here, Nat, Carla and Mirrah share their own fashion-related memories.

NATALIE BASSINGTHWAIGHTE, 35

Growing up, I loved designing outfits for my mum to make – remember the “ra-ra” skirt and bubble top? I wanted to wear both to my school disco so Mum made them for me.

On the night of the dance, she drove me to school and took my younger sister along for the drive.

As we approached the driveway, I asked her to pull over so I could get out; our old Mitsubishi was so daggy.

Just to annoy me, my sister told Mum to drive right up to the door to make sure I “got inside safely”.

As the front of the school hall got closer, I started panicking so I jumped – yes, out of a moving car.

My skirt and top were intact but my stomach, elbows and shoulders were bleeding. I soldiered on, bruises and all. I didn’t last long because I was in so much pain, but the fact I went says something about my determination.

CARLA ZAMPATTI, 68

I’ll never forget what I wore to my mother’s funeral because it was a very, very important day – saying goodbye to someone dear is always hard.

I wore a very simple black dress with a small veil on my head – I felt I should wear something that reminded me of her and her style.

She was Italian and inspired me to become a fashion designer when she took me to her dressmaker. It was there I first experienced the excitement of seeing people create clothes from scratch for their customers.

MIRRAH FOULKES, 28

I’ve always been pretty adventurous with my fashion choices…but not necessarily smart. I remember one particular fashion disaster: I was in Jakarta promoting Long Road To Heaven – a film about the 2002 Bali bombings – and I was dressed by a local designer for the opening night.

It was a crazy batik number and I had to wear a strapless bra, but the one I packed had lost its elasticity. Halfway down the red carpet, in the middle of a TV interview, I realised my bra was around my waist.

There wasn’t much I could do, so I walked the rest of the red carpet with my arms crossed. It was embarrassing but that memory always makes me smile and reminds me not to take life too seriously.

Australian actors Jacki Weaver, Nicole Kidman, Geoffrey Rush and Toni Collette have all received nominations for the 68th Golden Globe awards overnight. Cue nationwide applause!

Jacki is up for the award for best performance by a supporting actress for her role in Animal Kingdom, which won 10 gongs at the AFI awards on Saturday, including a best actress prize for her. For the Globes win, Jacki is up against Amy Adams, Helena Bonham Carter, Mila Kunis and Melissa Leo.

Veteran nominee Nicole Kidman has been nominated for best actress for Rabbit Hole and, while she has our vote, she’s up against some tough competition in the form of: Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams, Halle Berry and Jennifer Lawrence. Natalie’s performance in Black Swan has had Oscar buzz surrounding it since the beginning, and everyone knows the Golden Globes are an Oscar dress rehearsal, no?

Geoffrey’s nom is for best performance by a supporting actor for The King's Speech and Toni’s for best actress in a television series for United States Of Tara, a gong she won last year.

La La Lara Bingle's singalong

Lara Bingle's bestie, Hermione Underwood, has posted a candid video of the two of them lip-syncing to US singer Jason Derulo's song 'Ridin' Solo' on YouTube. Jason was obviously flattered by the rendition, as he retweeted the link to it via Twitter.

Lara and Jason were briefly romantically linked when they met co-hosting the ARIA Awards this year and were spotted spending weekends together hanging out.

But perhaps he was just teaching her the words to his songs. Jason told a Brisbane radio station that Lara is "a very nice girl" and they're "just friends", Sydney's Daily Telegraph reported.

It's bananas! Anne Hathaway to host Oscars

Today the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced James Franco and Anne Hathaway will co-host the 2010 Oscars in February next year. Apart from Anne (and maybe James), it's safe to say Anne's stylist Rachel Zoe is like the most, totally, excited!

Rachel and her now ex-assistant, Brad Goreski, dressed Anne for last year's Oscars red carpet and on-stage appearance, but not without some Rachel Zoe Project-style freak outs.

The silver Armani Privé gown Anne wore on the red carpet was originally rubbing on her back. And Brad was stressed it would leave a horrible red mark visible when she changed into her costume to perform with Hugh Jackman in the opening number of the awards ceremony. Eeek!

But as with all fashion fairytales the styling went off without a slip. "Annie looks gorgeous," Rachel said as she watched Anne walk the red carpet. "Her body in that dress is out of control … Annie looks mind-blowing."

So will Rachel take on the job of styling Anne for the hosting gig? Not only is Rach without her sidekicks Brad and Taylor "Tay-Tay" Jacobson now, she will also be heavily pregnant so the pressure will be on. But, something tells us RZ won't miss out on this styling op!

Alexa’s TV comeback

That was quick, Miss Chung! Shortly after her MTV show It’s On With Alexa Chung was cancelled, Alexa is set to make a return to the small screen.

The Times Style Section reported that Alexa’s new TV venture will be all about teaching Americans how to get thrifty with pre-loved clothing and dress like a totally-cool hipster al la Alexa.

London 'it' girls

New York City 'it' girls

Her new show will be called Thrift America and “will comb the country's consignment shops, garage sales and flea markets for old clothing and other potential treasures to use in creative endeavours… Think of it as Antiques Roadshow meets the foodie romp Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations," reported the paper.

In the Times feature, Alexa also revealed her main fear about being a London gal-at-heart on American television: “I’m going to America and they’re going to try and make my hair shiny and I don’t want it. I want to look like Kurt Cobain,” she said. “All of my beauty icons are men.” Well, if Alexa says it’s so hot right now…

Olivia’s new TV venture

Olivia Palmero barely gave us a moment to miss her! Almost immediately after MTV announced the cancellation of The City, the reality TV starlet revealed she has another venture up her designer sleeve: her very own show.

New York City 'it' girls

“I’m currently working on a TV project…my own show,” Olivia announced via www.elle.com. This is all the info she has dished at the moment, so no word whether she will be playing the good girl or villain on the show, or if Lauren Conrad will be making an appearance (as if!).

In the meantime, Olivia and her (ridiculously-gorgeous) BF have been promoting and modeling in Mango’s S/S 11 campaign in New York and, you know, attending cool parties around town. Sigh.
