Hot to trot

It was lifestyles of the rich and the famous on Melbourne Cup Day with special guests, American rockers Good Charlotte. The charming brothers graciously posed for pics in the nightclub-style Lavazza marquee (albeit in the roped-off section of the exclusive tent in the already very VIP Birdcage) hosted by coffee kings the Valmorbida family. The fine food distributors treated guests to an antipasto spread by chef Guy Grossi. New dad Joel Madden was sadly sans Nicole Richie, and his brother Benji narrowly missed ex-fiance Sophie Monk, who was making a beeline for the Emirates marquee.

Opening Ceremony opening party, Tokyo

All the cool kids flocked to Tokyo for the grand opening of cult retail store Opening Ceremony in Shibuya. You had Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in their Maison Michel lace animal ears (we want!), Kirsten Dunst channelling a Harajuku girl in a black and white Lolita-esque dress, Jason Schwartzman and Stavros Niarchos. Designer Alexander Wang was also there with his muse Erin Wasson. (Shouldn’t they be putting the finishing touches on their collections? New York Fashion Week starts September 10!)

The September Issue NY premiere

The Prada Cruise-clad devil herself and star of the show, US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, hosted the New York premiere of The September Issue, the R.J. Cutler documentary chronicling the making of the fashion bible’s 2007 September edition, which remains its biggest issue to date.

So who made the cut on Wintour’s guest list for the exclusive soiree? Vogue favourite Renee Zellweger and cover girl Sienna Miller, looking as “toothy” as ever (just one of Wintour’s cutting critiques of their cover star, you’ll have to watch for yourself to find out what else she had to say…) have already been spotted on the red carpet at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Vogue staffers Andre Leon Talley and Grace Coddington (who we think steals the show with her kooky musings on life with Nuclear Wintour) are also expected, along with Patrick Demarchelier, Tommy Hilfiger, Phillip Lim, Alexa Chung, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Zac Posen and Jason Wu.

Wintour is going all out to support The September Issue, even agreeing to appear on the Late Show With David Letterman this coming Monday. A Conde Nast rep revealing to the New York Post she: "is going to ad-lib it. She's done plenty of live TV before. She's looking forward to it."

No word yet on whether she will come out from behind her trademark dark sunglasses. Stay tuned…

The September Issue is out now.

Louis Vuitton opens in Westfield Bondi Junction

Louis Vuitton opened its second Westfield store this week. First there was the gigantic, ultra-indulgent store in London's new White City Westfield. I visited it not so long ago while I was doing a spot of shopping at the UK Grazia's pop-up charity store. And now we too have our very own LV shopping centre store offering.

The Prince, the polo and the A-listers

,

You might think that stomping out divots on the polo pitch doesn’t sound like the most glamorous of past times, but when it involved watching Prince Harry play in the 2009 Verve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic charity match on Governor’s Island in New York the A-list came out in their droves.

Click here to see which other A-list stars attended the polo

We spotted Kate Hudson and Chloe Sevigny in their demure polo outfits and hats, designer Marc Jacobs with his fiance Lorenzo Martone chatting up a storm with pal Madonna (who dressed down in denim for the occasion) and her boys David and Jesus in tow and that was only the beginning. Amazing to see what a royal visit can do.

With this AAA-list crowd, most of the action happened off the field. But in case you’re interested, Prince Harry’s team took out the title.

The MET Ball: red carpet hits and misses

,

The Costume Institute Gala Benefit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is “fashion’s party of the year”. This year the fashion pack turned up the volume with their sometimes controversial red-carpet choices. Here, the G team’s pick of the hits and misses:

Ashley Olsen
Pristine white and pristine taste – some people might call this a sack but we love it. Unexpected and cool as always. Sigh.

JT and Jessica Biel
Looks like Justin didn’t get the memo that the theme was “Model As Muse” this year. He’s still channelling last year’s “Superheroes” theme in Clark Kent glasses. And Jessica? We love a lady in red.

Posh
We could maybe go there with the 80s-inspired polka dot dress (pity about the train at the back which looks like it weighs more than she does) but we would never pair it with those clumpy Louis Vuitton shoes...but we'll probably be wearing them next week.

Kate Moss
The turban is a little Grey Gardens (Little Edie Beale anyone?) but we think the supermodel still smoulders in gold Marc Jacobs, oozing old world glamour. Just one note: matching your turban, dress and shoes is way too much.

Anna Wintour
Keeping it simple this year with a more traditional black and white Chanel dress. We’ve just recovered from last year’s Superheroes-inspired Chanel number which was said to make her look “like she's encrusted with ammonoid fossils”.

Madonna
Fashion road kill or genius? Sometimes it’s a very fine line. Our reservations? We’re not sure bunny ears, over-the-knee boots and a very short dress should appear in the same sentence. Even if she does have the yoga moves.

Helena Christensen
Supermodels belong in Vogue, not necessarily wearing Vogue, as Helena Christensen did with her logo-emblazoned Zac Posen dress. Does the supermodel really need to campaign for yet another cover? Just give her one already guys!

Kirsten Dunst
We’re hoping the starlet is preparing for a role in a Stevie Nicks biopic. Enough said.

Blake Lively
The Gossip Girl has graduated! Blake Lively is sex on legs, but where is the disco?

Team Stella: Kate Hudson, Stella McCartney, Liv Tyler and Kate Bosworth
Kate Hudson is back to her sunny self in gold and Kate Bosworth looks effortlessly retro, as does Liv Tyler, who wins this one for us. And then there's Stella, who sacrificed her usual understatement for a full-on lace jump suit. We love her less is more look, but she's fashion fearless.

Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson
She can be accused of being boring, but you can’t really go wrong with a classic Chanel couture mini dress and a handsome date can you? Thanks again Uncle Karl!

Mary-Kate Olsen
Mary-Kate looks like she burst out of a gothic romance novel with her frothy (and lacy!) Christian Lacroix gown.

Agyness Deyn and Twiggy
Given the theme is Models As Muses we think these two icons should have showcased the unique style we love so much instead of channelling someone else’s. Aggy you are not Marilyn Monroe and Twiggy you are not Liza Minnelli in Cabaret – but we still think you look fabulous!

Leighton Meester
Number one rule: don’t wear something you are uncomfortable in. Leighton looks like a little girl lost (in sequinned leggings and too much pattern, to be exact). Shoot the stylist, we love you Blair!

Rihanna
We’re loving the androgyny of Rihanna’s tuxedo look. This girl is fierce, but we still can’t help humming “party like it’s 1999” when we look at her.

Liz Hurley
Hurley loves to work a good gown, but tonnes of apricot tulle just screams bridesmaid to us.

Anne Hathaway
Anne turns Marc’s ultra-80s creation into 60s glam – channelling her recent movie Get Smart perhaps? We’re getting a more Brokeback Mountain beauty queen vibe from the hair though.

Marion Cotillard
C’est chic – the Oscar-winning French actress is utterly flawless in her nude Dior gown. It’s quite a feat, making it look this easy.

Miranda Kerr
The Aussie beauty didn’t top our Grazia Survey for Best Body for nothing! Miranda is smoking hot in this sleek back gown with super-sexy cut-outs. Orlando is a lucky boy.
