Girl power

In what is seen to be a significant step for feminism and one giant smackdown for the Scandinavian sex trade, Iceland has proven itself to be the little country that could. Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir just passed a law to close down every strip club. Which apparently makes it the first country in the world to do so for feminist, rather than religious, reasons.

As far as girl power goes, you have to hand it to the tiny Nordic nation. Iceland was the first country to elect a female president – a single mother – almost 30 years ago. It boasts a high number of female politicians; almost half of its parliamentarians are women. And it ranks fourth out of 130 countries on the Global Gender Gap Index.

But is this new stripping ban really and truly another notch on the belt of feminism? Like many industries, the sex trade can certainly be a murky one, edged by exploitation and at its worst, human trafficking.

Part of me thinks there's something, um…empowering about taking advantage of what is a well-established weakness in men. [Especially if, like one woman I know, it helps fund your university studies.]

Think of it this way: throughout history men have been more than willing to pay – repeatedly – for the privilege of seeing a woman's naked body. The reason male strip clubs haven’t truly taken off is basically because: women are smarter, superior beings. Save for some initial curiosity about Jamie Durie's Manpower troupe many years ago, most of us wouldn’t pay to see a naked man gyrating on a pole. (Not more than once, anyway.) We don’t need to.

We know, should we want to stare at a nude man, we can easily find a willing specimen who will happily whip out his bits for free. Or we can simply tune in to The Footy Show.

Too much information?

If a gaggle of politicians get their way, my boss could be fined $60,000 for my portrait on this page. They’re demanding that all digitally enhanced images are stamped with a health warning: “Photograph retouched to modify the physical appearance of a person.”

Reality bites

Some days it’s a little harder to get it together. You know those days…your skin won’t behave, your hair just isn’t happening, you wish you were someone else (someone like Gisele Bundchen). To top it off, the outfit you’d workshopped in your head last night hasn’t worked in reality – and you only realise this standing at the bus stop.

Give it to me baby!

I once found myself deep in a discussion about the intricacies of childbirth with a 65-year old woman I had only just met. When delivering her son she’d had what she described as the biggest orgasm of her life. (Never did I think I’d hear the words “son” and “orgasm” in the same sentence.)

Therese Rein, I blame you

In my High Maintenance column this week, I damn our politicians for continuing to uphold the GST on tampons, nine years after an exemption was first tabled in Parliament. Despite Labor Party protests in 2000, the Rudd government haven’t reviewed the tax. [Why their wives/daughters/mistresses haven’t managed to convince them to drop it, I just don’t understand.] But no matter, Coles have come to the rescue! The retailer has reduced prices on all feminine hygiene products by 10 per cent to offset the GST.

Sensory symphony

News from NY: Thierry Mugler, the designer behind shoulder pads we adore and fragrances we wear even more, is the backer behind Green Aria, the olfactory opera opening at the Guggenheim any day now. Orchestrating music with scentual sequences that stream out from “scent speakers” fixed to the audience’s chairs, we’re not just talking posh smellovision. Green Aria is all about the olfactory. The musical score was carefully composed to tell the story of scents like Magma, Green and Crunchy Green, which were designed by French parfumer Christophe Laudamiel.

Smells like a fortune

It’s a topsy turvy time. Established companies are crashing...Thousands seem to lose their jobs somewhere in the world each week...And then there was the Yves Saint Laurent auction at the Grand Palais in Paris last week. The late designer’s art collection – amassed with his long-time partner, Pierre Berge – raised an enormous $746 million, shattering all estimates. Among the Picassos, Mondrians and Matisse artworks was a little perfume bottle with a very big price tag.
